✨Experiments in Liberation #3: Refining Your Response (The Self-Agreement)

We've practiced listening deeply. We've defined the level of self we are choosing to operate from. Now, we put it all into action through refinement. This is where liberation meets the ground of your daily life through Self-Agreements.

Let's return to the conversation that sparked this series, where my own frustration revealed a gap between my desires and my default reactions. Have you found yourself in this place before? Often?... maybe more often than what you'd like??

When I caught myself on "quick auto-pilot mode" it illuminated for me: I can have desires for a relationship (connection with people, places and things), but without clear agreements with myself on how to show up, I can default to old patterns. The tool I needed was a self-agreement. These are measurable behaviors, the 'how' behind the 'who' you are choosing to be. They are your personal conduct code.


Based on my defined focus (my self-focused mentality), I crafted these three agreements:

  1. I will be open to opportunity.
    (My definition: I will not jump to the first solution. I will stay curious.)
  2. I will apply what I know and understand.
    (This stops me from denying my own wisdom or conflating facts with fears.)
  3. I will always do my best.
    (This one is borrowed with gratitude from Don Miguel Ruiz's The Four Agreements. It releases me from the trap of perfectionism and people-pleasing. My best is enough!)


These agreements refine my response. When a triggering situation arises, I don't just react. I have a treaty to reference: "Am I being open? Am I applying my knowledge? Is this my best right now?"

This creates space between stimulus and response, the space where choice lives. This line of questioning with myself slows me down in the best way.

Your Experiment: Craft Your Liberation Treaty.

  1. Know Your Mode: Revisit your focus from Part 2. Are you operating from sacrifice, center, or focus? Craft agreements that pull you toward your next level.
  2. Keep it Simple: Write 2-3 measurable agreements. Like, "I will pause and breathe before responding in tension," or "I will honor my creative time as non-negotiable."
  3. Live Into It: This week, let these agreements be your syllabus. Your objective is to give liberated responses. Your homework is to practice them.


The Journey Continues: This 3-part series is a primer for a deeper journey. As Toni Cade Bambara wrote, 'The revolution begins with the self.' These experiments are your personal revolution. And in these revolutionary times, what we need most are resilient leaders, in our communities, in our offices, who are intentional about how they listen, where they stand, and how they stay true to themselves.

Feburary 23, 2026 Cheers to a new day Star, Wow, there's a fresh new energy around us! Can you feel it? Something has shifted and I'm feeling very energized and clear.
